You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:

This Dental Laboratory Technician position is located at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee, and directly collaborates with an Oral Surgeon and Staff Dentist to design and fabricate complex dental or intra-! oral maxillofacial appliances. This involves (1) working with these specialists in developing the design of the appliance, (2) personally fabricating, or overseeing the fabrication of the appliance; and (3) resolving problems in its fabrication. Such assignments require a very thorough knowledge of oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition; a thorough knowledge of laboratory materials, tools and equipment; and, a very high degree of skill in their use. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Constructs routine full and partial dentures, dental splints and obturators, model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products (functions include pouring and final impressions; fabricating custom trays and bite rims; mounting casts on articulators; setting teeth for trial dentures/partials; investing, packing, processing and finishing dentures/partials; polishing prosthesis following adjustment; fabricating night guards; pourin! g and pinning of final crowns; fabricating crowns, inlays and fixed par! tial dentures from gold alloys, porcelain or acrylic materials; fabricating fluoride trays; fabricating stints; managing implant fabrication process and fabricating wrought wore clasps, etc.;
  • Selects appropriate porcelain or acrylic facings of proper shade, size and shape;
  • Articulates casts, adapts wax to die and carve pattern to proper anatomical contour and occlusion;
  • Constructs and fabricates bite raisers, cleft palate obturators, fracture splints, immediate dentures, surgical template and orthodontic appliances;
  • Works chair side to observe dental abnormalities and makes recommendations which will be incorporated into patient treatment plan;
  • Provides education, training and instruction to other dental laboratory technicians, dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, summer aids, volunteer workers and dental students;
  • Maintains dental laboratory and personal work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition;
  • !
  • Reviews safety and function of equipment in lab and performs basic care and maintenance of dental laboratory equipment;
  • Prepares, packages and receives cases that are managed by contracts outside the VA; and,
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. -AND-

In addition to the English Language Proficiency, you must meet one of the following:

One (1) full year of spe! cialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in Federal Se! rvice. This experience must be close to the work of this job and has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the Dental Laboratory Technician. Examples of qualifying experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and respo! nsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. NOTE: Applicants who have recent experience performing dental arcylic work preferred.

One and a half (1½) years of graduate education only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. -OR-

Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if they have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures. Note: If you are a licensed professional dentist, you must provide a copy of your license with your application package.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: There are long periods of standing, sitting and bending required. It is necessary to climb onto counters in or! der to replenish plaster bins. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds from the floor to the counter to the plaster bin is required.

Work involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of plaster dust, fire (open flame), chemical exposure (methylmethacrylates, alcohol, polymers, sterilizing agents) and communicable diseases (exposure to blood, saliva, tissue, bone). The lab technician wears face masks, protective glasses, and uses special aseptic techniques when handling impressions or other items that are potential infection hazard. The technician works in a clinic setting with some exposure to patients in dental treatment rooms.
