Anesthesia Technician

Contributes to the Anesthesiology department by preparing the Operating Rooms with equipment and supplies to support the daily workload; assists anesthetists and anesthesiologists, patients and co-workers; tracks and maintains equipment, specialty carts, trays and inventory; competently operates equipment and subsequently evaluates and repairs malfunctions; facilitates ongoing education of staff.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Prepare Operating Rooms for daily workload
FDA anesthesia machine check
Basic set up for general, MAC, or regional cases.
Inventory and stock for OR cases.
Consult operating room schedule to determine equipment needs for procedures. Prepare operating room for indicated procedure to include setting up and calibrating monitoring equipment.
Ability to assist licensed anesthesia care provider in clinical settings outside the operating rooms, included but not limited to: interventional and or/diagnostic radiology, Cath Lab, endoscopy, ambulatory surgery suites, and any other areas as needed.
Assist Anesthesia Care Provider with Patient Care
Intubations (demonstrate knowledge of techniques and equipment)
Invasive line placement - arterial, central, PA (knowledge of how to calibrate and troubleshoot)
Can perform department sterile and aseptic techniques
Knowledgeable in the use of fluid devices
Technical
Function as first line of defense in troubleshooting situations involving machines, monitors, and equipment relative to Anesthesia
Clean, repair, and perform routine maintenance on anesthesia equipment to ensure proper function
Clean and reset equipment and operating room quickly and accurately for the next case
Patient Safety
Exercise proper infection control precautions according to Vanderbilt and department policy
Troubleshoots, reports, and removes defective equipment
Disinfects EKG lead wires, O2 pulse oximeter probe, NIBP cuff, and surfaces of anesthesia machine and cart between patient use as well as any obviously soiled equipment
Maintain inventory of emergency carts - trauma and airway
Responds in a timely manner to pages and requests of the anesthesia provider
Respect and Professionalism
Arrives on time for work and meetings
Maintains privileged information for patients and colleagues (avoids gossip)
Exhibits positive attitude and remains flexible with scheduling/assignments
Reads email regularly to stay informed
Pursue certification after meeting minimum requirements of ASATT
Abides by the Standard of Practice established by the Department
Makes appropriate use of "down time"
