Position Summary
The Department of Research and Collections of the University of Alabama Museums is seeking a highly-motivated researcher in the area of history and ethnology to serve as Curator.

Detailed Position Information
The history collections at the Alabama Museum of Natural History date back to the mid 1800’s and include over 50,000 objects. The collection is made up of a variety of objects displayed in the Gorgas House (https://gorgashouse.museums.ua.edu/), Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum (https://transportation.museums.ua.edu/) and the Paul W. Bryant Museum (https://bryantmuseum.com/) in addition to items from WWII, the South Pacific and beyond.

This position is a 9-month non-tenured faculty position at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor depending on qualifications and will oversee all ethnographic and historical items in the ALMNH collections. We are looking for someone with strong curatorial skills and a passion for research in one or more areas that would involve this ethnographic and historical collections. The ALMNH is also interested in connecting research in these areas with our visitors and the local community.

The Curator of History is responsible for managing the ethnographic and historical collections including, in conjunction with the Director, Research and Collections, developing plans for maintenance and expansion. Writing proposals to fund the collection and create synergies with faculty and other researchers promoting deposition of objects in the ALMNH collections. Creating and maintaining an active research program focused on these collections. Managing a budget for history and ethnology collection activities and administering grants and proposals for these collections. Oversees the recruitment and coordination of ALMNH assistants and volunteers working in the history and ethnology collections. Teaches one course per regular semester in history, museum studies, or a related field. Assists with development of policies and processes conforming to best practice standards for the long-term preservation and conservation of objects within the collections.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in History, Communication, Museum Studies or related field.
