As a
Senior Project Engineer
, the main objective is to successfully complete projects that are demonstrably meaningful to Kohler Company’s business objectives and which further the growth of a quality minded culture within Kohler’s Kitchen & Bath group.
Project selection will be accomplished though a number of mechanisms, including assignment by the Quality Manager, requests from manufacturing,
or by analysis of warranty or other relevant process or product performance data.
Additional requirements include meeting quality, cost, safety, and productivity goals.
The Sr. Project Engineer - Quality must also be able to effectively lead cross-functional teams to drive larger projects.
Under the direction of the Quality Manager, this engineer will function primarily as a technical project manager and/or subject matter expert for! the shower door platform to assure a continued focus on Quali! ty.
An additional responsibility of this position is to assist the manufacturing facilities in implementing the Kohler Operating System (KOS) in the Kohler â€" Union City location.
It is expected that the Sr. Project Engineer â€" Quality will assume a leadership role with his colleagues in the facilities he supports as needed. If called upon, he must also be capable of directing the process improvement activities of a Quality Engineer or Technician.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE
1)
Lead or participate in variability reduction and process or systems improvement projects. This includes project planning, utilization of statistical and quality tools during projects, keeping project timelines on track, and following up on previous projects.
2)
Drive Kohler Operating System (KOS) implementation in the operating units supported by this position. These efforts may include Business Process Reviews, Kaizen events, Quality syste! ms development and deployment, and training.
3)
Serve as primary member for NPD teams.
4)
Participate in FMEAs and support the efforts of NPD teams with respect to project manufacturing, especially in the identification of critical Quality Characteristics, manufacturability, process capability, product inspection and test, and process control plans. The Engineer should be especially focused on identifying and controlling the process variables which have the potential to affect product quality.
5)
Initiates and manages a wide range of structured problem-solving activities using problem solving methodologies.
6)
Verify identified issues, kick off investigations, and implement corrective actions to drive and coordinate yield and warranty improvement activities.
7)
Assist the facilities in organizing product containment activities where necessary while leveraging yield improvements across ! product lines.
8)
Work with the Corrective Actions Gr! oup to analyze field failure data and conduct audits as necessary. Determine root causes and eliminate them.
9)
Participate in supplier quality improvement activities in conjunction with the Supplier Quality Group.
10)
Develop reports for management, make recommendations based on technical reviews and initiate corrective actions through data-driven methods to process and product improvements.
RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTACTS
Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to Quality Manager at the Kohler â€" Union City Location.
Organizational Relationships:
Frequent contact with the manufacturing team and functions that are supported
by this position regarding quality projects, KOS, and systems development.
Frequent contact with Engineering to assure compatibility of design proposals to
available internal processes, supplier manufacturing capability and quality project
sel! ection.
Frequent contact with other Quality and supporting functions as needed to further
projects that the Quality Project Engineer is driving or working on.
Some contact with Marketing regarding customer feedback or in the context of a product
platform team.
Occasional contact with Customer Service related to field claims and improvement projects.
Occasional contact with Purchasing regarding purchased components and the associated impact on finished product quality.
External Relationships:
Occasional contact with customers, distributors, contractors and product end users regarding product related performing issues.
Occasional contact with suppliers to establish process capability and develop controls.
Attend trade shows, seminars, and conferences as prudent to keep skill-set relevant.
WHAT YOU NEED TO QUALIFY
Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering or scienti! fic discipline from an ABET Certified university.
At least 5 y! ears of applied experience in Quality Engineering or Process Engineering is required.
Demonstrated Project Management experience is also required.
Applied work experience should include the use of most of the following in a manufacturing operations environment; Six Sigma tools, lean manufacturing methods, advanced statistical techniques, project management, and Quality systems development.
The candidate should also be articulate in both written and oral communications.
HOW YOU CAN STAND OUT
Solid project planning skills, good general problem solving ability, and strong computer aptitude.
Recognition by ASQ as a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Certified Quality Manager (CQM) is highly desirable.
ISO 9000 or TS 16949 experience is a plus.
