Job Summary:
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of Erlanger Health System including management of the profit and loss statement for the hospital?s business, as well as the related sources associated with the hospital operation. In this capacity, the COO carries responsibility for integrating the development of high quality, cost effective and integrated clinical programs within the hospital. The management portfolio held by this leader is notably diverse, with corresponding broad organizational implications and complexity, characterized by substantial scope of responsibility in this respect.

The COO will exercise management responsibility over the hospital ensuring efficient services that are designed to meet the needs of patients, physicians, the public and staff. This will either be done directly, or through delegation of responsibility to the management staff. The COO is exp! ected to act in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer.
The person who will best succeed is one who is visible, an outstanding communicator, able to build relationships across a diverse organization, respectful of others yet can make tough decisions and enhance the operations of the organization. This will take an individual that is highly creative and who can eliminate unnecessary cost while continuing to deliver high quality care. The successful candidate will have a track record of success working closely with physicians to improve operations and cost.

Education:Required:
Masters Degree in Business, Healthcare Management or directly related area.

Preferred:
Experience:Required:
At least 7 years in executive healthcare administrative position with progressively increasing responsibilities, solid career track demonstrating strong leadership and management responsibilities.

Preferred:
At least 3 years Academic Medical Center experience; a! nd 3 years of leading multiple acute care hospitals.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration

Required:
ACHE Fellow (FACHE) required.

Preferred:
Involvement with local, regional and national healthcare administration organizations.

Department Position Summary:
? Promotes, reinforces and personally demonstrates the operating philosophy, mission and core values of Erlanger to all patients, associates, medical staff members and the communities the health system serves.

? Cultivates productive relationships with associates, medical staff, and other ERLANGER constituents to ensure positive relations and high credibility. To achieve the operating goals, a high level of associate and medical staff commitment is essential. The COO must be a visible advocate for performance improvement and build credibility with these constituencies and others, based on goal achievement, good judg! ment, operational expertise and past successes in a complex healthcare ! environment similar to ERLANGER.

? Ensures that systems, processes and procedures are in place and utilized to continuously improve the services, efficiency and outcomes of all departments. The COO works closely with finance, corporate resources and other operational leaders to ensure appropriate information is available to make sound operational decisions.
? Oversees and manages the development of appropriate policies and procedures to ensure hospitals are in compliance with the necessary regulatory legislation, the Joint Commission (TJC), and System requirements.
? Interface with Officers of the University.

? Appropriately represent the hospital at the Health System Board of Directors level.

? Develop and foster effective collaboration between clinical departments, divisions, medical staff leadership, faculty and other affiliated services (inside and outside of the hospital) to ensure an integrated approach to providing services, and ful! filling the hospital?s clinical, research and educational goals and objectives.

? Where appropriate, represent the hospital to the external market, as well as internally through the application of community relations and marketing activities.

? Develop new business strategies to enhance market share and improve overall performance.

? Work through the management team and medical leadership of the hospital, serving as a resource to help reduce costs, enhance revenues, achieve effective utilization and quality goals and objectives, analyze and utilize information to develop and support management decisions.

? Expand Erlanger?s outreach activities and referral networks to ensure effective partnerships are formed which will facilitate the development of a comprehensive and geographically dispersed integrated health care system.

? The role requires significant leadership skill and ability. The COO will be accountable for the overall su! ccess of operations of the hospital. He/she will lead and oversee the d! evelopment of division operating and strategic plans.

? Attention is to be given to systems, program development, quality, fiscal management, compliance and clinical management measures, physician relationships, outreach strategies, work culture enhancement and internal communication and consensus-building. He/she will ensure that Erlanger?s disparate resources are
focused enterprise-wide on optimally satisfying the health care needs of those we serve.
