Position Description - Resp! onsibilities and Requirements:
AmeriCorps Member Needed: We are currently looking for half time members (20 hours/ week from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) with education or social service background to join the THRIVE youth development team at Martha O'Bryan. THRIVE is a comprehensive enrichment program for elementary and middle school students that supports the whole child --academically, socially, and emotionally-- and this role will be instrumental in addressing the educational needs of our students during our out of school time programming. The half-time education assistants, under the guidance of THRIVE staff, will conduct homework help and additional academic enrichment as well as facilitate communication and learning opportunities for families connected to THRIVE. Half-time education specialist will start service in mid to late August, 2013.
Service Description : Martha O'Bryan Center is located in the heart of the primary community we serve, the C! ayce Place Homes, Nashville's most at-risk neighborhood. Cayce! Place consists of 720 rental units housing 2000 residents, crowded onto 63 acres. 87% of the households are headed by a single woman and 66% of the residents are children under the age of 10. The average annual income for these families is less than $5000. The poverty line in the United States for a family of four is $20,000 (U.S. Census Statistics).
The center has been serving this community for almost 60 years. AmeriCorps members will provide individualized tutoring for youth, and work to strengthen the relationship between school, child, and parent. Most of our children are faced with significant barriers to success, including the isolation of poverty and the lack of adult support systems. In terms of tangible resources, they often lack access to textbooks, computers, and other tools of success.
Member Duties : tutoring, homework help, and planning and implementing community service activities with children and families. It is helpful to have ex! perience working with elementary and/or middle school aged youth and their families.
Terms : Car recommended, Permits attendance at school during off hours, Permits working at another job during off hours.
Qualifications
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older as of August 01, 2013.
At least two years of college education is required. Applicants who have completed college work in education or social work are preferred.
Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship or other lawful authorization to work in the U.S.
Selected candidates must be drug-free.
Applicants must have no criminal record or prove that existing records will not interfere with job duties.
Applicants must have the ability to access transportation, including public transportation, to work-site and community-based work assignments. Some projects may require the use of the Members’ own vehicles.

Program Benefits : Living allowance of $6,050 for ! 48 weeks, training in program activities and an Education Award of $2,750 upon successful completion of service.
