With life cycle thinking playing such a role in the innovation process and with LCA methodology continuing to develop at a rapid pace, this role offers opportunities to contribute to Eastman's discovery, research and business strategy efforts and to provide leadership in an important and evolving field.

As a member of the Process Evaluation and Engineering Research group, the primary responsibilities of this individual will be to contribute to the development and use of new life cycle methodologies and tools and to perform life cycle assessments (LCAs) for Eastman products - ranging from gate-to-gate "screening" LCAs for prospective products to ISO-compliant cradle-to-grave LCAs. While the calculations and interpretation involved in producing meaningful results do! require strong technical skills, effective communication skills are essential; this position requires significant interaction with others in Research and/or manufacturing areas to acquire necessary data and with business organizations to interpret results, answer questions, and assist in developing business strategy.

Eastman has recently announced an agreement with North Carolina State University to establish the Eastman Chemical Company Center of Excellence and the associated Eastman Innovation Center (EIC) laboratory, which will be located on NCSU's Centennial Campus in Raleigh. Departments involved in initial research interactions include: chemistry, chemical and biomolecular engineering, materials science and engineering, textile engineering, chemistry and science, forest biomaterials, and graphic design and industrial design, as well as NC State's Center for Innovation Management Studies. A small staff of Eastman employees is expected to move into the EIC lab! space on NCSU's campus in early 2013. The LCA expert role being descri! bed here will primarily be carried out as a member of this group of Eastman employees, with extensive collaboration with chemical engineers in Kingsport who have been developing Eastman's LCA capabilities for a number of years. Being located at the EIC, with close connections to Eastman technical and business personnel in various locations, will enable this individual to leverage academic collaboration to develop new tools and techniques and to continue to expand life cycle thinking in our design process and throughout Eastman Chemical Company.

Specific Job Responsibilities:
Perform life cycle assessments (ranging from screening assessments for potential processes/products to ISO-compliant LCAs), including data acquisition and calculation.

Provide interpretation and produce documentation of LCAs.

Develop and maintain connections to life cycle experts at NCSU and other external organizations to expand knowledge of this quickly-evolving a! rea.

Engage NCSU life cycle experts as appropriate to leverage capabilities to perform LCAs and to develop/assist in adopting new life cycle methodologies and tools.

Work with others in Eastman Research and the Sustainability organization to provide perspective and education to business organizations regarding LCAs and life cycle thinking.

Work with business organizations to prioritize LCA work and to assist in the development of strategies for the use of LCAs for particular products and families of products.

Support business organizations, as necessary, through interaction with customers and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

Education

:

Ph.D. (with B.S. and/or graduate degree in chemical engineering! )

Required:
Life cycle training with experience per! forming LCAs.

Strong math skills and modeling experience.

Familiarity with the chemical industry and ability to generate basic heat and material balances of chemical processes.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to interact positively with group members, project teams, and external organizations.

Chemical engineering background is important; environmental background is a plus.
